Amongst conflicting reports in the media about the positive effects of completing an alcohol free January, we decided it was time someone looked at the Facts. With alcohol issues being more prominent than drugs in Britain, could a month off – or longer – be so bad for health? This will not be a debate about whether a dry January ruins the pub trade, or a defence of peoples addiction, it is a simple look at scientific facts and a weighing of the pros involved with abstaining from alcohol for the month of January.

We will not suggest that it encourages others to drink more for the rest of the year, or that if you want a break it means you are an alcoholic. What these campaigns are, at heart, is a call for awareness and charitable contribution, nothing more.

Whilst smoking and diets high in animal fat are the biggest contributors to cancer diagnoses, Alcohol is behind a not insignificant amount. Of course, alcohol is also known to be greatly detrimental to health and a leading cause of liver disease.

Unfortunately, reports over the health detriments and benefits are almost always conflicting, but often the case seems to suggest, MODERATE amounts can actually be good for you, and that small amounts of red wine could be the key to a longer life thanks to its recently discovered ingredient Resveratrol.

What is abundantly clear though; is that like smoking, consumers are aware of the health risks, and choose to indulge in these behaviours anyway.

Alcohol can cause toxic damage to the body, but can also cause oxidative damage, increasing the chances of disease and damaging overall health and well-being. It is theorised then, that a detox and diet consisting of Anti-oxidants may protect against some of the damage caused by alcohol consumption, and also, Milk Thistle is an effective detoxifier and protector of the liver.

Detox has a long history,  and anecdotal evidence suggests it can be very powerful indeed, so when then are there shouts in modern media that it is a pointless enterprise? Surely, these claims are based in ignorance, and they make assumptions about modern consumers i.e. everybody is destroying their bodies 11 months of every year.

It is common knowledge that a balanced diet and exercise is key to a long and healthy life, as long as detoxification efforts are well thought out and backed by proven medical science, surely they could be beneficial?

Championed by Alcohol Concern to encourage the average consumer to be more responsible, and actually think about their consumption by having conversations with peers. Over 4,500 people took part in 2013, and this campaign is aimed more towards “social drinkers” whose habit may have crept up on them. With the promise of a healthier mind, body, and wallet, who wouldn’t want to have a go?

17,312 people committed to and took part in Dry January in 2014 and saw £4 million donated to Cancer Research UK.
